Monobase Wind, a leading innovator in floating offshore wind technology, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction (E&C), a renowned Korean engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contractor, proudly exhibited their revolutionary MSPAR floating foundation design at WindEurope 2024, held in Hamburg, Germany.

The MSPAR floating foundation design, the result of extensive collaboration between Monobase Wind and Daewoo E&C since 2021, represents a transformative leap in the floating offshore wind industry. This innovative solution combines the logistical and operational benefits of shallow draft floaters with the stability and performance characteristics of traditional SPAR technology. By integrating steel and concrete components, MSPAR optimizes local content usage while reducing reliance on steel, offering a highly adaptable and cost-effective foundation for floating offshore wind farms. The foundation has highly compact dimensions to optimise use of storage space in current ports and assembly yards. The MSPAR can also be grounded at quayside to ease assembly using land-based cranes.

“We are excited to present the MSPAR foundation at WindEurope 2024 as part of our ongoing commitment to delivering groundbreaking offshore wind solutions,” said Geert Jan Hoek, CEO of Monobase Wind. “The MSPAR technology is uniquely positioned to meet the challenges of harsh marine environments, offering smart logistics, quayside assembly, solid suitability for float-to-float in-situ maintenance, unparalleled stability and performance, ensuring operational efficiency and supply chain flexibility. This is a critical step forward in the commercial deployment of floating offshore wind.”

The MSPAR design has been engineered to thrive in the most demanding ocean conditions, making it ideal for markets with high wind speeds and large waves. Its excellent motion behavior allows it to maintain operational stability even in rough seas, while its shallow draft capabilities ensure easier deployment and assembly in both shallow and deep waters. These features make MSPAR particularly attractive for projects located in regions with limited infrastructure or complex marine environments.

The two companies are now focusing on the final stages of commercial development, with a full-scale prototype of the MSPAR foundation in the pipeline due for installation in 2026. This prototype will pave the way for large-scale deployments, contributing to the global shift towards clean energy and the expansion of floating offshore wind as a viable and scalable energy solution.
