Monobase Wind, a leading force in renewable energy, has inked a groundbreaking Joint Technology Development Agreement with South Korean-based Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd (Daewoo E&C). This strategic collaboration, formalized in November 2021, marks a significant step towards advancing the MSPAR Floater—a revolutionary offshore wind turbine foundation concept.

The consortium, formed by Monobase Wind B.V. in the Netherlands and Daewoo E&C in the Republic of Korea, is dedicated to a four-year joint development effort, aiming for a commercial roll-out of the MSPAR Floating offshore Wind Turbine Foundation by 2025. The MSPAR concept introduces disruptive technology, allowing for inshore assembly at quaysides with a water depth as minimal as 10-15 meters. Additionally, it provides in-situ adaptability, boasting a draught of 60-70 meters suitable for wind parks in deeper waters (exceeding 70 meters) hosting turbines with capacities surpassing 15 MW.

The adaptable design of the MSPAR Foundation is poised to accommodate a variety of deep water areas and MetOcean conditions worldwide. An integral aspect of its design philosophy is to maximize local content for fabrication, installation, and maintenance, promising substantial reductions in CO2 emissions during transport and installation. Leveraging over two decades of collective experience in maritime structural design, ship fabrication, and offshore industry expertise, the consortium is confident in delivering a pioneering solution that addresses current challenges faced by developers and investors.

“We are excited to collaborate with Daewoo E&C on the development of the MSPAR Floater—an innovative solution with the potential to transform the offshore wind energy landscape,” said Geert Jan Hoek, CEO at Monobase Wind. “This partnership combines our expertise and experience to create a sustainable and economically viable foundation that meets the evolving needs of the industry.”

The Consortium aims to accelerate the technology’s development, with conceptual design and model testing scheduled for completion by April 2022. The subsequent milestones include Basic Design and certification in principle by the end of 2022, with a full-scale demonstrator slated for introduction to the market in 2024.

“The MSPAR Floater represents a promising leap forward in offshore wind technology, addressing key challenges and ushering in a new era of efficiency and sustainability,” stated David Hoek, CCO at Monobase Wind “Together with Daewoo E&C, we are committed to delivering a transformative solution that benefits the entire renewable energy sector.”

This collaboration signifies a powerful synergy between Monobase Wind and Daewoo E&C, driving innovation and establishing new benchmarks for the future of offshore wind technology.
